Patent landscape is a detailed and multilateral study and analysis of patent documentation, based on statistical and intellectual processing of large volumes of scientific and technical information, thanks to which it is possible to correctly assess the patent situation in a certain sector of the economy, taking into account temporary and territorial characteristics: country, region or on a global scale.
Patent landscape research begins by searching a database for prior art patent information regarding a topic of interest to the researcher.
Next, information about available specific developments and their authors, performers, places of registration of exclusive rights is analyzed, and at the final stage a report is drawn up, which provides conclusions and recommendations made based on the study and analysis of patent information.
That is, building a patent landscape allows an interested party to:
- correctly navigate your developments and innovative technical solutions and correctly assess market activity in the economic sector of interest;
- identify competing companies that own patents in their area of interest, their activity and direction of strategic business development of these companies, their market potential;
- detect signs of cooperation between companies;
- identify areas not covered, which will allow you to make adjustments to your own business development strategy;
- understand which markets are more appropriate to enter and which ones should be avoided, where to invest your resources;
- which companies are more expedient to acquire, or which specialists are important to attract for cooperation.
With this in mind, the patent landscape is an important tool for minimizing risks and determining the right strategic direction for a company's business development.
As practice has shown, in the field of patent protection of developments of domestic and foreign companies located on the territory of the Russian Federation, there is currently their interest in receiving the services of patent analysts, which makes it possible to assess promising directions for future innovative inventions in certain market segments.
Patent research, on the basis of which patent landscapes are built, can provide an invaluable service to the state and private companies in identifying promising areas in various sectors of the economy and identifying areas for sales of innovative products, as well as possible strategic partners and competitors.
